Nothing To Sneeze At
Since not a lot has been going on around here you all know that you are going to get either bird or chicken pictures! Ha! Actually, a fair amount has been going on around here but I don't think ya'll are really that interested in seeing my organized bookshelves, clean bathroom or piles of stuff going to a flea mall, E-bay, the recycling center or Goodwill. As I mentioned in the last post, I have been feeling somewhat better and my little bit of new energy has been going towards cleaning, purging and organizing. January is always good for that sort of thing. And, it's the only thing I know to do when my future is uncertain and I don't know what my next steps are going to be. By this I mean my job, or what I'm going to do now that I can't do pottery anymore.
I am considering trying my hand at slip-cast pottery because you can better control the growth of mold in slip and drastically reduce your exposure to such things. I have been playing around with it some but so far I'm not real enthused. I think I need to make some molds of my own work and then it might be a bit more interesting to me. Slip cast work can be just as durable/ usable as any stoneware, as long as it's made of stoneware slip and fired correctly. So, the quality is there. I mean, after all, all the CorningWare you buy is slip cast. Heck, even toilets are liquid clay to start with!
So for now I am selling a bunch of stuff through E-bay and Allen has gotten into the flea mall scene, so I'm sharing a booth with him selling collectibles and some handmade crafts and such. I've been lugging around boxes and boxes of stuff for 20-something years that belonged to my brother and an aunt and something needs to be done with it. Fortunately, my brother had excellent, expensive taste and I've made a fair amount off some of that stuff. In case that sounds kinda harsh, I have kept a few things that were his. Mainly I just wanted his photos and things of that nature. None of my other family was interested in keeping his china or such and he had a huge sci-fi collection of books and all sorts of things that didn't really interest anyone either. So, whadya do?
It's also a good way to get rid of some of my pottery I consider seconds and make a few bucks. This particular flea mall we are in has very high traffic and I've been selling a decent amount of old books, tableware and other collectibles I had from my first marriage that I have no interest in anymore. I always feel better after I clean and get rid of stuff! Even better if I make a little money!
I have sold all my show stuff (tent etc.) and sold my big clay slab roller back to the guy I bought it from, so that gave us room to build some shelves in the basement for starting seeds with grow lights and such. I have never really been satisfied with the veggie starts I buy at the local co-op or whatever and this way we can start the exact types we want here. Because of my allergies now I am having to eat a little bit of a different diet, one that includes many, many fresh plants and not so much meat, so expanding on my own gardening is about a necessity. For example, I cannot really eat red tomatoes but I may be able to eat white or green tomatoes. And yes, there is such a thing as white tomatoes.! I also need to eat a more diverse selection of greens and herbs and about the only way to do this sort of thing is to grow it yourself.
So, it's all a lot of change- out with the old and in with the new!! But all you can do is just go with it and try to make it into something interesting and fun.
One other note: JO, sorry if it looked like I skipped your comment in the reply section and that it took me so long to post it. For some reason, a very few of ya'lls comments do not show up in my email and I don't know that a comment has been left unless I check either the blog or the blog dashboard, which I forget about and don't do a lot. Trust me, I really appreciate ALL comments left here and don't mean to ever skip or overlook anyone.

Summer's End
Well, there's not been a tremendous amount of things going on around here but I have managed to keep consistently busy for the past couple of weeks. I've been hurting pretty badly during this time also, so I haven't even tried to do any pottery. I did do a little welding for a small repair job, which was fun, but I paid for it that evening. I figured standing up and working would be better than sitting down and working but I guess I was bent over just enough and could barely move by the time I was finished. So, most of my time has just been spent cleaning up around the place, cleaning the garden up (as you see here) and cleaning and purging the house. That in itself has made me feel better.
The girls were a big help in the garden. We had a few days where we were going to leave in the afternoon, well before they like to go inside, so rather than risk not being able to get them all back in when we needed to go, we just opened the gate from their run into the garden. I'm so glad we built their run next to the garden with that gate because it has been very handy at times. Of course, during the summer months we can't let them in there but in the fall and winter there are many times when we can and so they have an expanded area on days when they can't go out in the yard for one reason or another. The big fig trees in there are good coverage for them too. If they are under there I can't even see them without digging! Or they can just run back into their covered run and coop.
Anyway, they really had a good time going through the garden after I had pulled up all the plants I wanted to discard. I kept a few tomatoes that were still producing a little and the cayenne peppers are still going strong. Despite those peppers being red the girls don't bother them! Haha! I find very few grubs in the garden anymore since letting the girls in every so often throughout the year. And of course, they fertilize as they go!
Susie was trying to decide which of my beautiful marigolds she wanted to trample upon. They actually left them alone but goofy George, with his gimpy foot, managed to mangle 1 or 2 of the plants. That's okay though. The marigolds had gotten so large they had split anyway and were flopped over.
Here Susie is making a last minute inspection to see if I accidentally threw anything away she might want. They are terribly curious about wheelbarrows and always go through them if you have anything in them.
I also harvested some herbs before the frost gets them and a bucket load of cayenne peppers to dry. I took my time about doing this cleanup though and enjoyed it, despite having to do much of it on my hands and knees or sprawled out on my hip. Bending over and sitting much are pretty much out of the question at this point.
I did go last week to see the BFD (big, fancy doctor) again and he has scheduled a MRI on the 20th of this month of my lower spine. I am very anxious to get that done and see what comes of it. Until then I skooch along on the ground and walk around a lot. Ha! I have developed a bit more enthusiasm for some actual building projects around here but my body is just not cooperating at this point. So, I do what I can.
The mums are blooming here and there but other than that the flower beds are pretty drab. The goldfinches were having a blast with a lot of the old seed heads so I always leave them.
The leaves are just barely starting to turn here now and I heard we are supposed to have a colorful fall this year. How they can tell I have no idea but we'll see. It was well into the 80s this week but next week is supposed to cool off considerably.
Has fall arrived where you are (or spring?) or are you still stuck in Indian summer?

How Dirty Girls Get Clean
Well, now that spring has really sprung, you all know what that means!!! Time to CLEAN!! Yay!!! So, too further cement in your mind the idea that I'm bonkers, I'll admit that I love spring cleaning. I love any excuse to clean and throw away (or repurpose, recycle etc) excess junk. I just have to make sure that in my cleaning furor I don't throw away stuff I really need, bleach the dog or recycle all my underwear. I've already been cleaning and reorganizing for a few weeks now and have a few big chores left so I thought I'd do a spring (green) cleaning post and give ya'll a few of my recipes and ideas for sprucing up the house for warm weather. I think most of ya'll know I make most all of my cleaning supplies because it's cheap but mostly because it's better for our earth and I don't like washing nasty chemicals down the drain. Plus, homemade cleaners work great. Or at least I have found these to. First, is the cleaner you see in the photo above. Basically, I keep a half gallon glass jar and as I use lemons, limes, oranges or any citrus fruit like that, I toss the rinds in the jar and then fill it with plain, white vinegar. I let this sit for about 2 weeks in the pantry and then I use to to fill my spray bottles in the bath and kitchen. As you have new peelings just refresh the ones in the jar and add more vinegar as you fill your spray bottles. That way you always have some ready. If it sits for more than 2 weeks it's okay. To clean sinks, tubs and such I dampen the surface with warm water, sprinkle some borax around the sink or whatever, spray everything good with the vinegar, scrub and rinse. For toilets I pour about a cup of the vinegar in the bowl and then spray the seat etc. Dump some borax in the bowl and scrub. I let this sit for a while and then flush. Meanwhile, wipe the toilet clean with a damp cloth where you sprayed the vinegar. It cleans great and has a nice citrusy smell.
For tile showers I have a separate recipe but you could use this lemon vinegar in place of the plain.
Grout Cleaner:
7 cups of water
1/2 cup baking soda
1/3 cup ammonia
1/4 cup vinegar
Mix well and using a brush or sponge scrub over shower walls, let sit for a few minutes and rinse/ scrub off. I actually have to about double this recipe for my shower but this stuff really works and the clean lasts for quite some time. Of course, since it uses ammonia, please run your bath exhaust fan or open a window while you are doing this. If you don't like using ammonia just leave it out. You can also use a few drops of essential oil if you like for a nice smell.
And of course, cleaning windows are always part of the spring ritual so I thought I'd give ya'll that recipe too. I think this recipe works great but you can adjust it a little too and I've found that you don't have to be real exact with the measurements. I also use this to clean my stainless appliances as it doesn't streak but removes greasy fingerprints.
Glass/ Surface Cleaner:
1 cup white vinegar
1 cup water
1/2 cup isopropyl alcohol
There are tons of variations and recipes all over the place though. Just Google and you can find all kinds of stuff.
Generally, for my spring cleaning, I do all the windows and dust/ clean the trim for each all around. I wash all my interior rugs. (I do this periodically anyway but, you know). Clean and sort all the pantry shelves. Clean the refrigerator. Clean/ dust cabinet shelves and all bookcases. Clean all vents and filters. Clean behind/ under all furniture and probably some more stuff I'm forgetting.
We are also trying to purge a good bit this spring because we have another town yard sale coming up in May. Even though I try not to make any frivolous purchases throughout the year, and don't really, I still manage to some up with stuff I don't need. Now, some of it this year is stuff I found I had stored at my Mom's from way back that I had forgotten about. It's mostly stuff from my first marriage so it has absolutely no value to me and can make me a few bucks for something I do want! I've always read how some people get like a "shopper's high" from buying stuff and use shopping, and buying, to alleviate stress and unhappiness but I think I have just the opposite situation. I really love to find stuff I don't need anymore and am able to sell it!! To get rid of all that stuff and pocket some money just gives me the biggest rush!! Woowee Babyyy!! Of course, I also love those uber contemporary houses with like 2 pieces of furniture and a bonsai on the counter; you know, nothing else. I love Spartan aesthetics.
EDIT: Some people do not consider alcohol and ammonia to be "green" choices for cleaning based solely on the fact that they can be irritating to breathe, to some people's skin etc. My choice for using them comes from the fact that they are naturally produced (our own bodies produce ammonia), biodegrade easily and naturally and I use them ONLY in very small quantities. However, read up for yourself and make your own decisions.

Better Days
I think this post will wrap up the subject of Shelter because there is not a lot more to say about the building of my house, but I am going to go over my strategies for maintenance and utilities, because that is a big part of it too. Of course, most of ya'll know Allen and I built practically all of this house. Besides collecting reclaimed material that was probably the next biggest factor in my saving so much money on this house. I did everything I could possibly do myself and still continue to. Now, once again, I know I have a bit of advantage but even if you pay someone to black in your house and do the finish work yourself, or just do the trim or whatever, it all helps.
I have also stated before that if you are doing any kind of house work, remodeling etc. and need to buy material please do NOT assume the big box stores are the cheapest. I can't tell you how many times I have beaten their prices by going directly to a supply house. You know, if you have a big plumbing project or whatever, go to a supply house. They may be the same on say, pipe, but the big boxes will rip you a new one on the fittings and such. Just check around.
In the area of maintenance, I save a great deal of money by making my own cleaning supplies. All of these "convenience" supplies, like pre-packaged dusting clothes, are a bunch of crap that waste money. I keep about 2 boxes each of baking soda and borax, a couple gallons of white vinegar and sometimes some natural pine cleaner. I am also making a great lemon cleaner by infusing vinegar with discarded lemon peels. Just strain and spray! I also keep a bottle of rubbing alcohol, small bottle of ammonia, a few essential oils, some castile soap, salt etc. Once you have these ingredients you can make practically any cleaner for pennies of what store bought cleaners cost. And I know, everybody groans and whines, I don't have time to make my own stuff!! I have a crappy old cast iron sink right now in the kitchen that stains very easy. When it needs cleaning, I toss in a little borax, maybe a little squirt of soap and scrub with half a lemon or just the lemon peel! Works great and you don't even have to mix it up beforehand. Several years ago I bought a book by Casey Kellar called "The Complete Book of Natural Housekeeping". This is a very complete book on cleaning almost anything with, you guessed it, natural substances that are cheap! It takes me about 2 minutes to whip up a window cleaner, shower cleaner etc. and they work! Some of your basic items, like borax, are not real cheap but you usually use them sparingly, so they last for a good while. And yes, I get a lot of people whose eyes bug out when I say I don't buy cleaning stuff but I would dare say my house is cleaner and healthier than all those bleach drenched houses. Oh, one other thing, and I know some of you are going to hate me for this but I'm going to say it anyway. I let my cat stay in the house but she is very clean (she gets an occasional bath) and rarely has an accident on the floor etc. Chigger stays outside. It boggles my mind how many people these days let their animals, several of them even, stay inside like kids and let them piss and shit all over that house to the point that they have to get the steam cleaners in to clean the house and then complain that they are short of money. I'll admit I have brought a chicken into my house on occasion for doctoring but nothing stays and I never have to pay for cleaning. No flea bombing, no carpet cleaning or replacing!, very little allergy expense, no furniture replacement where Fido had a panic attack. And that's all I'll say about that.
Another way that I save, and even make money sometimes, is in seasonal decluttering spells. About twice a year I go through the house and gather stuff that I'm not using going by the year or 6-month rule. If I haven't used it or worn it in 6 months or so it goes. This is a great way to pick up a little cash actually but I have to admit, you need to be a little ruthless in your purging to make much money. Most people however, have enough crap stored up in there house to afford to be a little ruthless. Now, there are some things, of course, that don't get tossed. I mean, I have a few tools that rarely get used but when I need them, I need them; like that gawd awful motorized tamp. I'm talking about crap I know I'll never really use and don't really want. Anyway, I go through everything and it either goes in a yard sale pile or an Ebay or consignment pile. At this point I have just about yard saled myself out of most of that stuff but in the past that was a great way to make a little cash. Now days I have sorted out a number of items too good for a yard sale and am slowly selling them on Ebay. I'm not getting rich but it does make for some extra cash. Usually I just let the money collect in my PayPal account and then when I have a decent amount I pull it out for a bill or to buy something I do need. Yes, I know PayPal does take a little and sometimes is a butt but you don't have to use them. I have also scoped out a couple of consignment shops in town that I may take some stuff to that would be a pain to ship. If you have a good eye for collectibles and such you can often go to yard sales or thrift stores to buy and then resale at a profit but the key is to actually resale the item and not let them collect.
Utilities are another area where a little diligence can save you some money. So, for that reason we still hang clothes out to dry, as dryers use an enormous amount of power. I bought all Energy Star appliances for the house. I replaced many of the light bulbs with the new fluorescent type that severely cut usage but am still in a bit of a quandary over those because they use mercury. We are about to install a solar water preheater. I'm very excited about that and will show ya'll all the details when it happens. Of course, my house is a passive solar which works so well. I am working on installing room darkening blinds on the few, small, west windows I have. You wouldn't believe how much this helps keep a room cool. I installed one in the pantry and it works very well. I had tried the window film but just was not impressed with that.
I do kinda splurge on internet service but have almost no home phone service and rely on my cell phone. Lots of people don't even have land lines anymore. I've told ya'll my cell phone philosophy several times too! The cheaper the better! I want to get a call and send a call, no camera, no texting, none of that crap! But that is a very personal choice. Of course, since I'm on my spring water I have no water bill or sewer or trash pick-up to pay for. Since we recycle, reuse, compost or have reduced so, we produce very little trash, and the little bags we do make are taken out on roads trips and dumped in public dumpers. And yes, we make sure they are for public use.
So, I guess that covers the area of Shelter; maybe I didn't forget anything?
