Vibes And Stuff

I was really betting that we were not going to get that much snow, even by our standards of what is much. However, this one proved me wrong. I think here at the house, we have about 2.5 inches and it's still snowing. Yes, I know that is nothing compared to what ya'll get elsewhere but for Alabama, it's a little something.

I still have not been able to shake this bug that I caught. One day I feel pretty good and the next I'm knocked out again. I really need to recover before I go back to work next week 'cause it will not be a good thing to be sick and having to work in the cold and mud. I was getting really frustrated that I have not been able to devote much time to the house but I finally just said, whatever, and decided to relax. I'm not going to get the siding finished by then so I might as well just try to get over this sickness and maybe piddle around on the house when I feel like it.
I'm glad to be going back to work because I have actually run out of materials for the house. I have 3 pieces of siding and am getting low on paint. I did receive my federal tax refund today, YEA!!!! So, that's great. I am making a list now of apple and cherry trees and a few other fruiting plants I want to order. I really want to make a better effort at equipping my land with food-bearing plants.

I also am planning a budget and seeing how much I can save when I do go back to work. I believe I will be able to save at least 60-65% of my income and come the end of the job, that will be a decent amount of money to work with. I really want to start adding some active solar elements to the house and building accommodations for chickens and such.
We had a very nice meeting of the Blount County Bloggers last night also. For those of you not familiar, that is me, Rurality, CountryPeaPie, Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore and MountainMelody and also Sharon, who doesn't have a blog but we are trying to talk her into it.

Oh, and in reference to Annie's Field Guide To Men as Rurality put it; those are just men that I have mentioned on this blog that have some relevance in my life now, or did, in the course of this blog. I listed them because a reader asked me about them and I know at times it may get confusing as to who I'm talking about. They are not all men that I have dated. After a couple of comments here and some discussion last night, I thought maybe I should make that info clear. Yes, some of them I have dated but the married ones, NO. They are just friends and yes, I do believe that men and women can be just friends.

So, I get asked a lot of how (financially and physically) I built this house, so I want to do a few posts on that. And by that I mean, how did I acquire funds etc. and continue to put so much of my income towards the house, how do I acquire salvageable material and stuff along that line. Anybody have any specific questions in that area?

Great snow! The snow line stopped just north of us dang it!

Sorry you are still battling that bug.
I like all the posts you do about the house and land so whatever you do there is fine with me!
I like the idea of landscaping with food producing plants too, so I'm tuned in for whatever comes next.

Glad you clarified the "man list". So it is basically a baseball line up card. Not all the players on the team are listed, just the ones who started the game...lol

I'm so wanting to add solar hot water panel to the house. I hope you beat me to it. You do such a good job of blogging your projects that they provide guidance an inspiration.

peace

Do you get the catalog from that company... I think it is called Edible Landscaping... Lots of cool plants there.

That was really a fun BCB!

Hey FC! Aw, wish ya'll had gotten just a little snow.
Well, I'm going to try to come up with several new projects shortly so maybe we'll all benefit.

Hey Woody! well, I thought I had made that clear about the guys but I guess not! Funny how you guys relate everything to baseball or cars or whatever!! lol! just the significant players I'd say.
I hope I provide guidance and inspiration but am not sure sometimes! thanks! Solar hot water is the first thing I think I want to do and yes, I hope i beat you too!

Hey Karen! no, I don't get that catalog but will be looking it up now!
yeah, I had a great time!

I forgot to add in the prior note that my granddaughter, lives in the deep south, sent pictures on facebook to her mother, [my oldest daughter who is staying a week w/me and mom] and said, 'sorry you can't be here mom!' to which my daughter replied, 'honey, don't worry, mom has much more snow here at gram/gramps than back home!'

Hey Euty! thanks so much for all your well wishes.
yes, I think south alabama got even more than we did, so I bet they were all going nuts!
Everybody here had a blast yesterday playing in the snow.

Hey Annie, start that high powered Vitamin C. You don't want a full return of the bug.
As for your snow...I was stunned. I had about 12 in. Wednesday; now compacted and melted (?) down to about 4in. but its coming down again right now. I've had enough, I say. Enough! Enough already! But oh, those poor folk above us.

Looks beautiful... we've got more coming this weekend too. I've been trying to get rid of some bug too, and it is frustrating. But hey, we're on the backside of winter with spring coming!

MamaHen said...

Hey Sissy! yeah, I've been on the Vit C for a while now, trying everything.
The snow is beautiful but I'm so ready for warm weather.

Hey Beau! Yeah, spring's coming!! I just keep telling myself that!

Blount County as in Tennessee? I have about four generations of my ancestors buried in that county.

I'm guessing from my past experience that with 2.5" of snow, everything was shut down and the store shelves were completely empty!

MamaHen said...

Hey Ed! No, Blount county in Alabama; I didn't even know there was one in TN.
Ha! well, we actually got about 3 inches or more but I didn't even venture out to see what the stores were like. From what I saw on TV and Facebook, most everybody was having a blast though. The TV reporters were all in snowball fights and playing. It was pretty funny. But yeah, everybody freaks out.

I would like to know more about salvaging. I always thought dumpsters were open to the public, but recently when I went to a dumpster to gather a couple of short 2x4s I was told to put them back by the site manager. Was he protecting his turf or are there laws out there?

MamaHen said...

Hey Cindy! Was this a construction site or something else?
It was probably a combination of turf protection and company rules. You must have permission to go through dumpsters on a construction site because if you get hurt, you could sue the company, so most bosses will get an employee to retrieve items for you or set them aside before they ever go in the dumpster if they know what you are looking for. This is why I always say to ASK the superintendent first. Never approach a dumpster or go out onto a site without speaking to the superintendent first. I'll do a post on more about this soon.
Thanks for your comment!

It was a new sub-division site dor 300,000-600,000 houses. There are dumpsters everywhere on the streets. I will do what you advised and see what happens. Thank you, great blog.

I should always double check my comments. $300,000-$600,000 houses....sorry.

MamaHen said...

Hey Cindy! good luck and always ask first.

I would love to hear about other places to salvage and the techniques on properly asking for permission, etc. Thanks!

I had a blast at the BCB dinner last week. It is snowing here again right now -- unbelievable! I normally prefer the cold and love it when it snows, but I must say that even I have grown weary of this particular winter.

We have a Blountville in Tennessee. Just a short piece from me in Sullivan County -the county seat; and a prison there too. Lots of old architecture there too.

MamaHen said...

Hey Duanne! got that up! hope it helps!

Hey Meg! yeah, i had a great time too! I love the snow also, although prefer warm weather, and I am sick of this cold. SO ready for spring.

Hey Sissy! that's interesting. yeah, we have a Blountsville just down the road from my town. Quaint little place with lots of antique stores.
